California Sparkling Wines for 2021

(LA Trend) — Pop a bottle of bubbly as you bid 2020 good riddance. Sip some California-made sparkling wines to ring in the new year safely from your home.

As any wine lover knows, champagne in sparkling wine but not all sparkling wines are champagne. True champagne hails from the Champagne region of France and is made with chardonnay, pinot noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes. Prosecco, another specific type of sparkling wine, is made from Glera grapes grown in the Veneto region of Italy. Lastly, the broadest category of sparkling wine is simply a carbonated take on wine made with chardonnay, pinot noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes.

Iron Horse Vineyards Resilience 2016

Pick this sparkling cuvée for the name alone. Resilience 2016 hails from the Green Valley in Sonoma County. Each bottle helps support the Sonoma County Resilience Fund which helps businesses recover from disasters and thrive. This aged cuvée is one of many sparkling offerings from Iron Horse Vineyards, an independent estate founded in 1976.

Schramsberg 2017 Brut Rosé

This bright, fruity rosé has notes of red cherry, pomegranate, and cranberry-lime. On the palate, there are lush flavors of mango, mandarin orange, and peach, with soft touches of brioche, orange zest, and vanilla. The fruitful finish has a juicy center with bright acidity, according to Schramsberg’s winemakers Sean Thompson and Hugh Davies. This lightly pink wine is made with Pinot Noir grapes grown in Mendocino County and Marin County.

Mumm Napa’s Brut Prestige

This award-winning wine has notes of bright citrus, red apple, stone fruit, and creamy vanilla aromas, with hints of toast, honey, and gingerbread spice. A selection of grapes are fermented in French oak barrels then blended with the steel-fermented grapes to create a unique flavor profile. It is aged an additional three months in cork to ensure the smoothest sip.

Domaine Carneros 2014 Late Disgorged Brut

This aged blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay offers notes of toasted macadamia nut, grilled pineapple, honeysuckle, and orange marmalade. After aging six years in the bottle, this sparkling wine offers full-bodied flavors of baked pear, lemon tart, apple pie, and lychee.
