(LA Trend) — Get away from the city and immerse yourself in art. Desert X, a recurring, site-specific international art exhibition, returns to the Coachella Valley until May 16. Marvel at 13 works by international artists that explore contemporary themes like migration, the role of women and children, and the global landscape.
Each installation is unique to the desert landscape and free to the public. With museums closed for the past year, this outdoor, socially-distant art experience is a welcome respite for art lovers.
“As much as the desert is a state of place, it is also a state of mind. Its borders are not singular but multiple, and it is defined as much by social geography as physical boundary,” said Artistic Director Neville Wakefield. “Desert X 2021 seeks to explore this idea of the desert as a place where the marginalized and migratory—whose voices and histories may have struggled to manifest within the dominant discourses of growth and development—can also be heard.”
One of the joys of site-specific work is its impermanence. One of these limited-time works is “Living Smoke; A Tribute to the Living Desert”, by Judy Chicago. Chicago has been practicing feminist art since the 1960s and her Desert X commission is a counterpoint to male-dominated narratives of Land Art, including “Atmospheres”, smoke pieces aimed at momentarily transforming and feminizing the landscape without leaving a mark or trace.
Fans of fashion will enjoy The Pit Stop, a collaboration between Gucci and The North Face. Wander around a geodesic dome built with different materials that speak to the temporary and transient nature of landscapes, travel, and exploration.
“More so than ever, Desert X 2021 is an exhibition for our times”, said Desert X Founder and President Susan Davis. “The curators have brought together an extraordinary group of international artists who have made compelling works that celebrate the Coachella Valley and its histories while provoking us to explore our commonalities and celebrate our differences.”
