Pumpkin Spice Treats to Celebrate Fall

(LA Trend) — With Halloween right around the corner, Los Angeles has officially slipped into Pumpkin Spice Season. Enjoy this famous, or infamous, flavor trend at some of L.A.’s most innovative restaurants. Coffee giant Starbucks is responsible for reviving the pumpkin spice in 2003 by the tried-and-true combination of fall spices that has been around since the 1930s.

One of the first references to pumpkin spice was in a recipe for Pumpkin Spice Cakes in a 1936 Washington Post article. The cakes were described as “Spice Cake Of Pumpkin Newest Dish: Delicacy Tempting to All Appetites and Easy to Prepare. Ideal Dessert for Family Dinner, Healthful for Children.” A few years later, the spice manufacturing company McCormick began selling Pumpkin Pie Spice, a combination of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves.

Today, pumpkin pie spice—or pumpkin spice for short—can be found in a variety of seasonal drinks and dishes. Enjoy these creative takes on fall flavors from L.A. eateries.

Opt for a gourmet take on pumpkin spice with Compartés. This elegantly wrapped white chocolate bar is filled with pumpkin and studded with warm seasonal spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Enjoy this orange-hued bar or split it with friends in lieu of trick-or-treating.

Adults can sip on a pumpkin spice-inspired beer from San Fernando Brewing Co. Sip the spiced, cloudy Pumpkin Pi Ale, or get your growler refilled at the brewery. You can also pick up a bottle of Jolly Pumpkin by Stone Brewing and enjoy a holiday ale flavored with white sage, juniper berries, and Michigan chestnuts. Although it’s light on the pumpkin, this full-bodied ale is the perfect winery drink for October and beyond.

Pair your pumpkin beer with a pumpkin pizza from Pitfire Pizza. Enjoy this savory take on fall’s favorite flavor for a limited time. The pumpkin pizza comes topped with wood-oven roasted pumpkin, goat cheese, seasonal greens, and pepitas for added crunch. Order pickup or delivery at one of Pitfire’s many, convenient locations.

Don’t let dietary restrictions prevent you from enjoying pumpkin spice. Erin McKenna’s Bakery offers a vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free, and kosher pumpkin loaf. Opt for the plain version or get it topped with creamy vanilla frosting for a real treat. Pick up from their L.A. location or share the goodness with nationwide shipping.

For a healthier take on pumpkin spice, opt for the refreshing pumpkin pie smoothie from Nekter Juice Bar. Sip on a blend of pumpkin, house-made cashew milk, banana, dates, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin spice to start your morning without the caffeine. Make it a meal by adding protein powders, extras, and other toppings.

Finally, stop by Valerie Confections for perfectly portioned pumpkin petit fours. These

Small cakes contain layers of luscious pumpkin cake and cream cheese ganache, dipped in white chocolate and topped with gold and orange sugar. Don’t miss the pumpkin seed toffee, either!

If you’re in the DIY mood, embark on your own pumpkin pie-making adventure with a fresh pumpkin from one of L.A.’s many seasonal pumpkin patches (check out Tina’s Patch!). Order a pumpkin for pickup or browse the patch with a mask and pick your perfect pumpkin.
