(LA Trend) — Although the origins of this saccharine holiday are less than sweet, modern V-Day is all about dessert. Valentine’s Day can be traced back to a pagan festival held by the ancient Romans who celebrated the feast of Lupercalia with a matchmaking ceremony, animal sacrifices, and copious amounts of food and wine. The pagan holiday was later combined with a Christian holiday honoring the martyr St. Valentine.
This religious holiday was later commercialized and switched its focus to romantic love. In 1913, the Hallmark card company began selling Valentine-themed cards and affectionate greetings have been a staple of the holiday ever since. Twenty years later, chocolates became the go-to Valentine’s treat after Jean Harlow’s performance in the film “Dinner at Eight” which featured the actress indulging in a box of chocolates.
